Archaeologia Mediaevalis

abbey of Notre Dame du Vivier at Marche-les-Dames

Archaeologia Mediaevalis 2020, the annually meeting of medievalists, building historians and urban archaeologists from the three Belgian regions and adjacent areas, was organised by the Walloon Heritage Agency (AWAP). The conference was held on the 12th and 13th of March at Namur in the industrial heritage site of the Moulins de Beez. Of course CRUMBEL could not be missed since the conference theme was ‘FIRE’. Rica Annaert gave a presentation on the aims and ongoing research of the CRUMBEL project, with an emphasis on the research possibilities for early medieval cremations. This presentation was part of the varied thematic program during the 1st conference day, ranging from the burned roof trusses of the Notre-Dame in Paris, all kinds of artisanal ovens and domestic hearths to phytoliths. At the end of the second conference day, already affected by the first Covid-19 measures, the strongly thinned group of participants had the occasion to visit the privately owned abbey of Notre Dame du Vivier at Marche-les-Dames which has its roots in the 12th Century.
