Dr Ioannis Kontopoulos
Ioannis is a bioarcheologist with specialism in biochemical, microscopic and macroscopic techniques for the study of bone, with a focus on bone diagenesis. He received his first degree in Archaeology at the University of the Aegean (Greece). Following a MSc in Archaeological Science (University of Oxford), Ioannis went on to study for a MSc in Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology (University of Sheffield). His PhD at the University of York (2015-2019) titled ‘Petrous bone diagenesis: a holistic approach’ examines the diagenetic characteristics of petrous pyramid and its capacity to act as a reservoir for surviving biomolecules.
Ioannis has also taught in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of York (Department of Archaeology). He is Assistant Editor at Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry (MAA), Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK (AFHEA), and member of various scientific societies.
